The Simpsons makes excellent social commentary.
Certainly this episode is funny, but it most certainly has a vitally important point to make as well.
Watching this episode makes me ask the question why.
Why do we have such a hard time facing our problems?
I think I know. Because we have such a hard time expressing our feelings.
We operate on a state of minimal awareness.
Acknowledging anything uncomfortable unbalances us and we refuse to do so.
Why? Because we know that if we become weak, if our sadness overwhelms us, nobody will help us.
On the Long March of Humanity, those who cannot keep up, will be left behind.
Best to ignore, then to acknowledge and be ostracized...
...but...then there's Lisa...
Finally, the entire problem in this episode stems from Homer's inability to admit he's wrong.
Why is that? Because Homer's self-confidence is so fragile, if he acknowledges his flaws, he will collapse into a state of absolute misery, and who will help him?
Truly. Humanity's problems all go back to the fact we can't express our feelings.
